Who is eligible to nominate a student for a scholarship?

Nominations may be made by any Better Business Bureau member in good standing, and any current BBB Educational Foundation Sponsor.

Who is eligible to win a scholarship through this program?

Scholarships are exclusively available to Better Business Bureau of Eastern North Carolina member firms' employees and their families. Scholarships are awarded to rising seniors in high school, high school graduates, and students who attend an accredited college, university, community college, or trade school. Eligible students must reside in the 33 Eastern NC counties that the Educational Foundation serves.

What are the scholarship amounts?

Scholarships range in amounts based on availability of funds and competitiveness of the applicants. Past scholarships have ranged from $300 to $2,500.

How many scholarships are awarded?

It varies from year to year depending on the success of the corresponding year's fund-raising efforts and contributions received. The more money that is raised, the more scholarships the Foundation can award.

What is the duration of the scholarship award?

These scholarships are one-year awards. To reapply, an applicant must submit a new, current application. Previous applications will not be automatically reconsidered.

Can a scholarship winner apply for another scholarship in ensuing years?

Yes, but a new application process must be completed.

Where does the nominator or applicant get an application?

Go to the BBB website www.bbbenc.org and click on the BBB Educational Foundation link and download the paperwork. Or contact the BBB office (919-277-4222) or the BBB Educational Foundation office (919-277-4217). You may also have an application package mailed, faxed or emailed to you (info@bbbenc.org).

When is the application period?  DEADLINE EXTENDED

Applicants must obtain a nomination and submit their applications during the application period. This period runs from August 1 through November 30. Applications must be received by November 30.

When will winners be notified of their scholarship and when will they receive it?

Winners will be notified within 30 days of the end of the application period. Scholarships will be presented at a press conference Raleigh. All scholarship money will be paid directly to the institution that the winner attends. The recipient has 12 months from the date of notification of award to use the scholarship money. Otherwise, award will go back into the Foundation's scholarship fund.

What types of schools can a scholarship winner attend?

Any accredited college, university, graduate school, community college, or trade school.

What are the criteria that determine who will win the scholarships and who makes the decision?

Eligible applicants that reside in one of the 33 counties with the jurisdiction of the Foundation will be considered on a competitive basis using the following criteria: academic achievement, extra-curricular activities (work experience, athletics, arts, volunteer/community service, etc.), financial need, a letter of recommendation from a BBB member/Foundation Sponsor (nominator), and a letter from the applicant. A Selection Committee of the Foundation will review all applications and make decisions based on the above criteria.

* No family member of a Better Business Bureau or BBB Educational Foundation board member or employee is eligible to receive a scholarship.

Required Information

All information is confidential. All applications received will become the property of the Educational Foundation. This application must be accompanied by the following required attachments, or it will be considered incomplete:

1. TRANSCRIPTS:

High School Seniors - official high school transcript including most recent completed semester.

High School Graduates - official high school transcript.

College Freshmen - official high school and college transcripts.

All other applicants - official transcripts for all formal education completed after high school.

2. INCOME VERIFICATION:

Single Applicant - a signed copy of page one, front and back, of last filed federal tax return for applicant and whoever claimed applicant as a dependant on their tax return.

Married Applicant - a signed copy of page one, front and back, of last filed federal tax return for applicant and spouse.

3. LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
FROM SPONSOR:

This letter is to come from the Better Business Bureau member or BBB Educational Foundation sponsor that is sponsoring you for scholarship consideration. It should indicate the reasons why your sponsor believes you should win a scholarship from this Foundation.

4. ESSAY QUESTION (500 WORDS):

Describe a profound influence an individual (unrelated to you) has had on your life.

Dates for submitting applications to the BBB Educational Foundation are as follows:

August 1 through November 30

IMPORTANT: If a transcript is being sent by the school at the applicant's request, it is the applicant's responsibility to follow up and be sure that it is received by the Educational Foundation's office before the deadline for the submission of that application. If not received by the deadline, application will be considered incomplete. Applications that are incomplete or postmarked after applicable due date shown above will not be considered for a scholarship.

Applications are individually and equitably evaluated on the basis of:

  1. Academic Achievement: Applicant's grade point average on current official transcript.
  2. Need: Applicant's need for financial assistance in order to continue education.
  3. Extra Curricular Activities: Applicant's involvement in and leadership in school and/or community activities. Work experience should be included as well.
  4. Additional Information: Letter of nomination and applicant's one to two page essay on ethics (topic to be posted during application period.). Other considerations will include any unusual and/or specific circumstances, academic workload and overall quality of application. NOTE: Once an applicant is notified of a possible award by the Foundation, proof of acceptance to an accredited institution must be provided to the Foundation within 60 days of notice. Actual awards are subject to final review by the Foundation.
